Directorate General of Shipping Recruitment 2026 – Naval Architects (Contractual) – Complete Details

The Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India has invited applications for the engagement of Naval Architects on a contractual basis. A total of 15 positions will be filled for the Shipbuilding Cell established under the Directorate General of Shipping. Candidates meeting the required educational qualifications and professional experience may submit their applications within the specified time period.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) is the apex regulatory authority for the maritime sector in India and operates under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The organization is responsible for implementing the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 and developing policies to ensure maritime safety, environmental protection, and the sustainable growth of the Indian maritime industry.

As part of Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Directorate General of Shipping is establishing a dedicated Shipbuilding Cell to strengthen India's shipbuilding and ship repair ecosystem. To support this initiative, the organization is recruiting qualified Naval Architects with specialized expertise in shipbuilding technical assessment, project planning, digital infrastructure development, and maritime investment facilitation.

Remuneration will be paid monthly in arrears through direct bank transfer. An annual increment of 5% may be considered based on performance and extension of engagement.

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree (B.Tech / B.E) in Naval Architecture from a recognized university or institution.
  • The candidate must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in the qualifying degree.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Naval Architecture is considered highly desirable.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in postgraduate studies in Naval Architecture may also be considered desirable for junior category positions.

Experience Requirements

Category 1 – Junior Naval Architects (1–4 Years Experience)

  • 1–4 years professional experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, maritime engineering or related maritime industry roles.
  • Experience may be obtained from shipyards (PSU or private sector), design houses, classification societies, maritime consultancies, or government maritime organizations.
  • Candidates will support senior professionals in technical analysis, project development and implementation activities.
  • Responsibilities may include technical surveys, preparation of technical reports, stakeholder coordination, and market analysis.

Category 2 – Senior Naval Architects (5+ Years Experience)

  • Minimum 5 or more years of professional experience in shipbuilding technical management, maritime engineering, or naval architecture.
  • Experience in shipyard engineering, shipbuilding project management, maritime policy advisory, or maritime consulting.
  • Ability to lead technical projects and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Experience in investment analysis, feasibility studies, and business model structuring for maritime projects.

Key Responsibilities of Naval Architects

  • Conduct technical assessments of shipbuilding and ship repair infrastructure.
  • Analyze shipyard capabilities and benchmark them with international standards.
  • Evaluate adoption of advanced maritime technologies such as green propulsion and automation.
  • Provide inputs for strategic planning and maritime policy development.
  • Prepare feasibility studies and technical concept proposals for shipbuilding projects.
  • Support development of national shipyard grading and rating systems.
  • Participate in stakeholder consultations with shipyards, ship owners, and maritime industry bodies.
  • Support digital infrastructure initiatives related to shipbuilding capacity monitoring.
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and project analysis materials.

Leave Policy and Working Conditions

  • Working hours will be from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch break.
  • Casual Leave: 8 working days per year excluding restricted holidays.
  • Restricted Holidays: 2 days as per Government of India rules.
  • Medical Leave: 10 working days per year with valid medical certificates.
  • Absence beyond allowed leave limits will be treated as leave without pay.
  • Field visits and stakeholder engagement may require travel and flexible working hours.
