Organization Overview

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a statutory body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It serves as the National Standards Body of India, responsible for activities such as Standardization, Product and System Certification, Hallmarking of Gold/Silver Jewellery, and Laboratory Testing. BIS also plays a key role in International Standardization and Certification.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Civil Engineering: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technology with at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) and valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: CE
  • Chemistry: Master's Degree in Chemistry with at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) and valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: CH
  • Computer Engineering: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology with valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: CS
  • Electrical Engineering: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: EE
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering: Bachelor's Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering with valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: EC
  • Environment Engineering: Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering with valid GATE score (2023/2024/2025). GATE Paper Code: ES

Age Limit

  • Maximum Age: 30 years as on 23.05.2025
  • Relaxation in Upper Age Limit:
    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC: 3 years
    • PWD (UR): 10 years
    • PWD (SC/ST): 15 years
    • PWD (OBC): 13 years
    • Departmental candidates in BIS: 50 years

Service Conditions

  • Surety Bond: The selected candidate must serve BIS for at least three years. If the candidate resigns or leaves before completing three years, they must reimburse six months' emoluments at the rate last drawn.
  • Probation: 2 years
  • Service Benefits: Leave, LTC, and Medical benefits are available as per BIS and Central Government rules. Leave encashment is provided for 15 days per year.
  • Posting: Candidates may be posted anywhere in India.
  • Career Prospects: Scientific Cadre Officers are eligible for promotions based on performance assessments as per the 'Modified Flexible Complementing Scheme.'
